About

Tony Williams

Tony has been painting in oils and acrylics since beginning classes in 2003. Prior to that he was a practicing studio potter, and from 1975 worked in his own studio in the Inner West of Sydney and in the Blue Mountains. He produced artworks and practical ware and worked with the renowned potter Peter Rushforth at his studio in Blackheath NSW. He has ceramic pieces in collections in Australia, Great Britain and Canada.

In 2003 he moved to Newtown in Sydney and rented a studio space at the Lennox Street Artist Studios at Newtown. He has exhibited at Solo and Group Exhibitions  in Australia and in 2013 in London at Menier Chocolate Factory Gallery, Southwark, with a ‘Group of 8’ artists from Lennox Street Studios.

Tony grew up in the wild rugged country of the Colo region west of Sydney. He developed a love of the Australian bush and country. He has travelled extensively overseas and through Australia. These experiences have strengthened his love of the Australian bush, its spiritual strength and physical beauty. His work reflects this deep appreciation of the stark beauty of the inland, the coastal regions and urban areas.

Tony paints what he calls “abstract landscape”, and enjoys painting what he terms his experience of the landscape, not necessarily reproducing the landscape but his interpretation of it.

“My work is a distillation of my impressions of the stunning Australian landscape, its endless variety and stark beauty, its spiritual power and presence. I love the amazing geographical formations of our land, the vibrancy of the colours, the shape of the land, the spiritual presence of its ancient landscapes”.

“I like to paint what comes as I apply paint to canvas; to see where it takes me. I like to leave the interpretation of my painting to what the viewer sees and experiences when viewing my work”.

After many years living in the Inner West of Sydney and the Blue Mountains, and travel overseas, Tony now lives and works at Port Macquarie on the NSW Mid North Coast.
